The cinema summer 2023 is pink. “Barbie” came, saw and conquered. The new illustrious puppet film won the premiere duel against Christopher Nolan’s “Oppenheimer”. Even after the bombastic opening weekend, the film, starring Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling, is setting new records.
Barbie Takes Over The Dark Knight
“Barbie” grossed $26.1 million, the highest domestic Monday box office in the studio’s history. Warner Bros. will be happy about that. Christopher Nolan’s “The Dark Knight” is relegated to second place. He held the previous record with 24.6 million US dollars. But now Batman has to admit defeat to a toy doll – a novelty.
Greta Gerwig triumphs again against the master director Nolan. With the new record, the filmmaker also achieved the highest Monday result for a female director in general.
“Barbie” is already considered one of the most successful films of the year. After a few days, the film has now grossed over 470 million US dollars worldwide. For comparison: The seventh part of the Mission Impossible series, which promises to be successful for Tom Cruise, has been in cinemas for a week longer and has so far “only” brought in a little over 370 million US dollars.
Positive critics and audience score
But do people like what they see in the cinema? An IMDb rating of 7.5 is really good.
The professional film critics at Rotten Tomatoes are more than convinced of the comedy with a voting of 90 percent. At 86 percent, the viewers are not far behind either. In short: go in and have fun. Barbie has a cult following and also conquers people’s hearts in the cinema. Not just for little girls.
